January 15, 2025 - The Fondation Marichette is launching an appeal to women in New Brunswick who would like to study in French at college or university, but whose financial situation prevents them from realizing that dream. Interested candidates are invited to apply, by March 15, 2025 at the latest, for bursaries of $10,000 each, renewable for the duration of their study program. In this way, the Marichette Foundation enables bursary recipients to pursue a university or college education that will give them better career opportunities, thus contributing to their financial independence.

While the Fondation Marichette usually offers ten bursaries annually, a major gift from the Hewitt Foundation, a philanthropic family foundation, will exceptionally enable it to award an additional 10 bursaries in 2025, renewable for the duration of the chosen recipient's college or university program.

"For the Fondation Marichette, this is a pivotal moment of the year that ties in with our mission of contributing to access to education for francophone women in New Brunswick. We always look forward to receiving applications from women who dream of a better future", says Foundation chair Nicole Gionet.

The bursaries are made possible through donations and activities organized by the Foundation. The number of bursaries awarded depends on annual revenues and the fund's performance. In particular, the recent capital campaign Étudier donne des ailes (Education Gives Wings) increased the number of bursaries to be awarded in 2025-2026.

Selection criteria include:

- The student/applicant must be a Canadian citizen or have obtained permanent residency, or be registered with the federal government under the Indian Act regardless of citizenship.

- The student/applicant must be a resident of New Brunswick.

- The student/applicant must be admitted on a full-time basis to a program delivered in French leading to an undergraduate degree, diploma or certificate at the university, college or vocational level in a recognized public or private Canadian post-secondary institution. Proof of admission must be provided no later than the start of the academic year. The student/applicant must demonstrate significant financial need.

The deadline for applications is March 15, 2025, and the selection committee will notify recipients no later than May 17, 2025. To apply, applicants must fill out the online form and provide two letters of recommendation. Only complete applications will be considered.

The Marichette Foundation facilitates access to education for New Brunswick women who rely on better training to escape a situation of economic dependence.

After the publication in 2011 of alarming statistics on the poverty rate of women in New Brunswick, women working in the community sector decided that it was time to act.

Recognizing that education is an effective way to increase one’s income and living conditions and given the fact that only 25% of New Brunswickers have a diploma or university degree compared to 35% of Canadian women, they chose to create a bursary fund.

After long months of work, the Marichette Foundation project finally became a reality.

On March 8, 2016, International Women’s Day, the Marichette Foundation was officially launched. Each year since then, the Foundation has offered bursaries to women in the province who have significant financial needs to enable them to pursue college or university studies.

  • 32% of single-parent families headed by a woman lived below the poverty line
  • 58% of women work for minimum wage
  • One in six women live below the poverty line in NB
